Whether you own a luxury resort, a thriving business complex, or a condo development that people call home, a green and lush lawn is an important part of your image.  Your lawn should be beautiful, lush, and inviting and reflect the professionalism of your business.  To obtain a thick, well-manicured lawn, it takes a lot of work and the right balance of cuttings, fertilizer, reseeding, and water.

  1. Mow High

During the heat of the summer months, it’s important to mow your lawn to the right length.  Grass likes for its roots to stay cool, and if you cut too short, the blades of grass won’t provide any shade for them.  Mowing it higher may require more frequent mowings but roots will grow longer and be able to absorb more water.  And mulch-mowing will put nutrients back into your lawn.

  1. Controlled Watering

It’s not enough to simply water your lawn, you need waterings to be at the right times and for the right duration.  Watering before 6 or 7 a.m. will allow most of the water to be absorbed before it gets evaporated by the sun.  When it’s hot and dry, your lawn should be watered for longer periods but more infrequently  to encourage longer root growth.  If you do it frequently for short periods, your roots won’t grow long because they won’t need to.  A smart irrigation system can be programmed for optimal watering and will adjust waterings when it rains to prevent overwatering which is not only wasteful, but it can kill your lawn’s roots.

  1. Feed It Right

A lush, green lawn’s gotta eat.  It should be fertilized in late spring/early summer and again in late summer/early fall.  A properly-fed lawn grows thicker which will help keep the roots cool in the summer and will prevent weeds from invading.

  1. Use Good Equipment

Lawnmower blades should always be kept sharp to keep a nice, clean cut and avoid damaging the blades of grass.  Believe it or not, dull lawnmower blades can actually put a lot of stress on the grass.  Old, uneven mowing decks can create an uneven-looking path and make your lawn look shabby.

  1. Reseed In the Spring

Be overseeding in the spring, before the heat of the summer hits, new grass will have a chance to develop strong roots and fill in the gaps in the current lawn.  It’s one of the best defenses against the summer heat as it helps provide a thicker barrier between the hot summer sun and the roots of your lawn.  Reseed again in the fall to prepare it for winter.
